What is Yu-Gi-Oh

Yu-Gi-Oh is a popular trading card game developed in Japan by Konami. It was first released to the public in 1996 and makes use of collectible cards from various vendors.

Yu-Gi-Oh is a tabletop or pencil and paper variation of traditional chess with an original story, background, directions for play, characters, methods of winning with rules about how many times you can play per day. The object is to put your opponent’s life points at 0 with one duelist remaining. There are six different types of decks including dragon, horsemen/armies (relating back to the biblical Book of Revelation), caves etc., also known as groups or themes  but there are many more than just these ones!

How to play the game

The basic idea is you want to summon creatures, cast spells and traps, and use other cards to either bring your enemy’s life points down or destroy the items that help them. You always start with 8000 life points which can change depending on what deck you are playing with. You want to get down to 0 by working cooperatively with your opponent in order to topple their health until they can’t come back up.

1) Choose a deck

You need someone who has never played before or someone who wants to be your partner in order for this game to work correctly. It would make sense for one person’s deck (either owned or bought) to be based on one of the six groups of cards previously mentioned.

2) Place your deck on the table and draw seven cards

You only get five cards each so you need to make sure they don’t go over that limit. You can either choose to do a regular draw or shuffle them first. Shuffling helps mix up the order so no one knows what you can do next!

3) Put down cards you draw

You put down the card in the middle of your side in front of you face-down. You can only have three pairs at one time. To summon a monster, you need to sacrifice another card (if there isn’t already another creature out on the field) and this can be done by turning your card sideways. When you activate a spell or trap, it is placed on the field with the creature.

How to read yugioh cards

Yu Gi Oh cards are read starting from the bottom left corner and moving to the right. The card’s level is indicated by the number in the upper-right corner, and the card’s attribute is indicated by the symbol in the lower-right corner.
